The semicolon tattoo has grown in popularity recently. Not everyone that has one uses the same meaning. There is one group that they associate themselves with it. We’ll get into that a little later.
For me, the meaning behind the semicolon is one that has some significant meaning. I myself have the semicolon tattoo. Personally it means that the story could of ended but continued on. I like what that stands for. So many times many of us think that it can’t get better. We drive ourselves down the mental road blocks and think that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. That’s about as far from the truth as one can get. There is always something to look forward to. Even if you can’t see it now just have some faith and believe.
As I previously stated there is a group that associates themselves with this symbol. It’s one that has every right to and it means a great deal to the people that are receiving it. Project Semicolon was founded by Amy Bluel. She received the tattoo in honor of her father who she lost to suicide. When you have a semicolon inked on your body, for this project, you’re helping raise awareness for both mental health disorders and for suicide awareness.
Amy said “A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.” Some of these mental health issues are depression, anxiety, self injury and addiction. Project Semicolon was made to give hope, love and understanding to those who are suffering from any of these issues. It helps them know that they aren’t alone in this world.
Depression is one of the longest and largest mental health disorders in the last one hundred years. It’s become more prevalent in modern times because science is showing how bad it can be. Some people aren’t even aware that they have such an issue until they’re to the point of almost giving up. It shouldn’t ever have to reach that stage. Many people think that they aren’t depressed or at least don’t want to admit that they are. Others are scared and think that they’ll be looked at differently if they give in to it and have to end up taking pills.
Anxiety is usually paired with depression. Feeling down and incredibly sad are two emotions that can create the perfect storm. Suicide has been paired with a disgust because it’s so bad. That is part of the case but for people with mental issues it’s the last resort. What death is to cancer, suicide is to depression.
This group focuses on combating those issues and trying to give hope to those in need. Raising awareness and trying to be part of the solution is something that anyone can be proud of. Getting a tattoo on your skin to forever remind of that issue and hope that you never see anyone else fall to it, is even better.
